To synthesise or not

One of the downsides of owning an older car is that it develops a thirst for oil which in my case has to be slated by the addition of a litre of the slippery stuff every couple of months.

Here’s my latest purchase.

It’s what it says on the can, plain engine oil which set me back €8 a litre. I could alternatively have had synthetic or semi-synthetic for something like €18 a litre.

I’m guessing that at this stage the synthetic is just a waste of money.

My 21 year old Ford Ranger was starting to weep a bit of oil, but I started using Mobil 1 full synthetic high-mileage formula.

Its a full synthetic with special additives that help recondition seals on older engines. The weeping has stopped after about 1 year of use.

Seems to be a well reviewed oil, especially for older cars with weak or thinning seals. Even my main seal, which has weeped oil slowly for a couple of years no longer drips any oil.

Sometimes using synthetic in a car which has always used conventional will sometimes cause it to leak worse - the sludge from dino oil acts as a kind of leak stop if some of the seals are going.

Synthetic is never a waste of money! Watch the “Engineering Explained” youtube video of the difference between conventional and synthetic oils.

higher mileage oil is supposed to have crap in it to help old seals and crap not leak and crap. might want to try that.

My S10 likes to go through a quart every 1,500 miles or so. Not good, but not bad enough for me to fix it.

I’ve been using full synthetic on everything in my stable. The only exception the ‘86 205 with its 1970s internals, that’s getting semi-synthetic. Ordered online a 5L Castrol or similar can is maybe €25-30 for the 5W40 full synthetic stuff, and €15 (per 5 liters) for the semi synthetic oil. I don’t buy no-name oil.
